It sounds like it could possibly an tension spring of the like not acting the way it should. For reference, do you by chance have the model # for your machine? I'm not sure if this is the correct diagram for your machine, but I would cross reference how your deck is setup currently with a diagram to confirm that everything is in the right spot.
