sticky trans

Depending on what type of trans you have it may be a stuck detent ball in the shift mechanism. Some trans. use a spring loaded ball to get in the right gear. If the ball gets dry of lube it can be difficult to shift, sometimes this ball is on the outside of the trans and sometimes its internal. Check linkage first before entering the trans. I had a similar problem on a Simplicity and a John Deere. The John Deere the ball stuck up in the recess and you couldn't tell what gear you were in because it wouldn't snap into place. Good luck!:)

Just saw the thread tonight. Mark is correct. The trans drive pulley is continuing to turn when the clutch pedal is depressed. Belt restrictors more than likely. The belt needs to loop a little on the back side of the drive pulley in order to release. The belt restrictors hold the belt in toward the pulley and when the pedal is depressed the belt flares out on the backside of the pulley.
