I have been bitten by a bit of a lawn mower bug lately as I look for a replacement for my lawnboy gold series push mower. In all honesty I don't need to replace it as there is nothing wrong with it, I just have never liked the front chute with ofset wheel design. Anyway, I have always had a liking for toro equipment so I have been looking to craigslist for used ones that need a bit of work for cheap. I already got myself a free 2001 toro super recycler with personal pace drive that just needed a good carb cleaning and maybe a new gasket set. It already trumps the lawnboy for ease of use and mowing around obsticles however getting the drive to disengage to pull it backwards is a bit clunky. I also miss having a throttle control lever to play with. So I'm still looking for my next mower to try out.

Anyway on to my question: I would like something with selectable speeds so I can throw it in neutral if need be. I have been looking at some late 80s toro deluxe pow-r drive mowers for cheap, these intregue me I have also been looking for a cheap early to mid 90s super recycler with a bbc to come up. My question is: does anyone have any experiance with either of these? Cut quality? Ease of repair? Is the bbc easy to fix in the later. Any input or opinouns are welcome.

I have a 1991 GTS 5 with a 5HP Suzuki motor. It's got variable speed and BBC. I starts and runs great. It mows very well. It weighs about a ton and I wish it had reverse. It sure does cut, though. No side discharge. Bag and mulch, only. The BBC is repairable and there is lots of info on Youtube showing how to do it.

a honda hrx217 might be a good machine for you. hydro tranny, bbc, cruise control, nextite deck. my grandmother has one at her house and once you use it you can never go back. its essentially the Acura of lawnmowers

Nice mower I'm sure but I'm only interested in old Toro equipment. I kind of failed to mention that I wasn't considering anything else in my opening post. I have a soft spot for Toro having a family member that works for them. I also grew up reading their catalogues from a very young age.

ok, i would recommend a toro with a 4 stroke ohv suzuki, cast aluminum deck, self propelled and bbc. just be aware how much parts will cost for the engine and that the mowers themselves can be hard to fine. i believe a carb kit is something crazy like 50 dollars, the ignition modules on the 4 stroke and 2 stroke suzukis are known to fail, and are like 150 to buy new
