I found a Toro Self Propelled Mower by the side of the road. The carb was all junked up, but I cleaned it up. The mower now starts on the first pull! It runs great for the first couple minutes. But then it begins to stall. If I shut off the self propelled, I can get another minute or two out of it. Eventually though it will stall unless I turn off the blade. It will run flat out great without the blade engaged, but as soon as I engage it, it will stall.

It seems as if something is slowly expanding and adding drag until eventually there is enough drag that the mower will no longer run with the blade engaged.

Any clue what is causing this and how to fix?

Hello, USMC, and welcome to the forum. I'm wondering if the fuel supply is gradually being restricted causing a loss of power. By shutting off the blade the engine needs less fuel and will continue to run for a bit. I wonder if the fuel cap is clogged and not allowing proper venting.

Brad,
I can try running it without the cap on, but I am doubtful that is the problem given how strong it runs without the blade engaged. I will give a try in the morning and let you know.

I might also mention that this seemed to come up all of the sudden. While I was still working out some of the carburetor issues I actually was able to mow the entire lawn. Now I can't get two passes around the yard before it quits.
