It would crank and crank but not start. I checked the ignition and it probably needs replaced too. It had a problem where it would run. Then die. I would have to wait several hours before I could start it again. I pulled the starter and tried it. The gear will pop up into the top of the housing but doesn't spin. Does that mean the starter is bad?

Thanks

You have different issues. First your starter is not working. It needs to spin to start. The stalling failed restart sounds like a bad magneto. If you cranked it more than ten seconds and kept it cranking, you might have overheated and damaged the starter.

It sure sounds like you fried your starter. :( They get hot real quick, and can't take it for long. Eric is on the right track with the bad coil; another thing you could check would be your gas cap vent to see if you have a vacuum related fuel starvation issue.
