Smoking HT-R3009

I just picked up a very clean HT-R3009 rider with bagger. Now I know enough to be dangerous. Initial start smokes like a fogger and is definite oil, but almost runs smoke free after about 5-10 minutes. I'm not sure what to tackle first. It's an overhead valve so I'm thinking valve seals, but not sure if it needs rings. Question is, what's been others experience?

Hello, WkeithK, and welcome to the forum. My first questions would be:

1. Are you sure the right amount of oil is in the crankcase, and no gas has leaked in?

2. Is the right grade of oil being used?

If the oil is very dirty you may want to consider putting a bit of Seafoam in the oil, running it for about 15 minutes and changing. Could be some sludge/dirt issues that need addressed.

OK, changed oil twice, both times using seafoam. Oil is now perfectly clean. checked fuel & carb, everything ok and there was no gas in oil. Still Smokin :)
