Simplicity Conquest...engine dies when I engage blade

28117 Views 29 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  QCTim
Looking for ideas. Bought my Conquest in 2005. Developed problem suddenly this week. Engine starts tractor moves but when you engage blade (PTO switch) the engine dies. Suspect it might be an issue with one of the safety switches....or possibly the PTO clutch. Anybody had any similar problems? Any ideas on what to check?

Great! Another round of congratulations are in order here on the forum. Lots of folks having success on their projects over the last couple of days. Not only did you get your machine up and running as it should, you have gained a lot of experience which you will be able to share with others as time passes.

QCTim,

I have a conquest. battery doesn't recharge. So i looked at the yellow connector and it is darker but not black.
Also I had to adjust the clutch spacing because quitting when engaging.
with snowblower i notice i have to have rpm up higher than with lawn mower.
here central ny we have 2-1/2 feet in last week so have running every night or morning or both

Redmower,
unplug the yellow connector ....mine was dark and even a little melted on the regulator side. I'm sure regulator could be bad and not have this physical evidence ....but thats what mine looked like. Check voltage at battery with engine running at normal speed....you should have 13.5-14.5 DC volts if it is charging. when you unplug the yellow regulator leads check the voltage across the two wires comming from engine strator with a multimeter set to AC voltage....it should read 30 or more volts AC if it is a model similar to mine. If that looks good but your battery voltage isn't in the charging range DC volts....then I would change the regulator.

Forgot to mention......before you mess with checking the regulator make sure your battery isn't bad. Recharge it and check voltage and see if it will start your tractor......If it charges and can crank your engine then its probably not your battery.
safety switch
If your read through my whole thread you will see that it was indeed a safety switch problem...as I too orignially thought......but it took some time for me to figure it out....it was the reverse sensing switch.....I just had to loosen the mounting screw for sensor and readjust it.
