I have a Ranch King 16HP 42" cut Hydro rider My problem is when i put the hydro in reverce with the blades engaged it dies out. Other wise it runs fine Could that be a saftey switch problem and if so where is it and how do i disconnect it or by pass it?
Thanks

Welcome Rangr90! :welcome:

That sounds like normal operation for most riders today unless you have a mow in reverse option switch. Sorry but it is against forum policy to explain how to bypass safety switches. (See the forum rules section.)

Has it always done this or were you able to mow in reverse before?

I bought the unit used so i dont know if it done it before. How do you put a mow in reverse option switch on it? That sounds like what i need.

Thanks

Have you tried holding the PTO switch in the engaged position with your hand when you're mowing in reverse?

It does not have a pto switch when you lower the deck with the handle the blades engage with it.

Question, does the engine die out or do the blades stop turning?
Also need to know more info.

It is a Ranch King Pro 16.5 HP 42" cut.

Model# 13A0695G205

Serial# 1B159C20033

I dont know when it was built.

When i put the hydro in reverce with the blades engaged it dies out the engine dies out.
Other than that it runs pretty good.
Any ideas?

Thanks

If the tractor is less than 10-12 years old, chances are it's designed to shut off the blades when the transmission is put in reverse. Some John Deere and Honda tractors have an override where you can force the blades to engage when in reverse.

Very similar logic is used on walk-behind mowers with a blade brake clutch; the operator has to complete an intentional, 2-step procedure to get the blade to spin. I suspect this is the law-of-the-land, per the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Probably Step 1 is to find out if your tractor has a engage-blades-in-reverse feature. If it does, then you can start testing and troubleshooting to find out why its is not working.

Caveat: I work for Honda, but the preceding was my opinion alone.

When i put it in reverce with the deck down and the blades engaged the motor (B&S) stops. Do you know where the saftey switch is?

You say you bought it used. If you are able to contact the person or place you bought if from, perhaps they can tell you if it is something this Ranch King has done before and if it is supposed to function this way.

If you have the operator's manual, that would be a great place to find out about what this particular machine is supposed to operate. If you don't have the manual, I believe Ranch King was manufactured by MTD.

I tried searching their site for the manual, but did not find one. Sometimes you have to email the company directly.

Many machines were made in different variants, so you will most likely have to refer to a parts diagram to determine where specific parts on your Ranch King are located.
Do you know where the saftey switch is?

No, I'm not familiar with that brand or model, sorry. As others have said, might want to contact the mfg. or maybe a dealer who's carried that brand.

Rangr90--Does your key switch on the Ranch King have a spot identified as "Mow in Reverse"? Might check that.

And please don't yell. We are trying to help.
Sorry that I havent gotten back to you sooner. I have searched for any manuals for this model and have found nothing so far. Tomoerrow Ill call MTD and hopefully they will have something hidden in archives.
This does sound like a problem with a safety switch, but without seeing the machine it is hard to diagnose. I'm in South Dakota, any chance you're close by?
Thanks Everyone i found it and pulled the wire and now it works great!!!
