I was asked to look at a friend's Ryobi 3100 psi, 2.5 GPM pressure washer with a Honda easy start engine. He told me that upon starting it for the first time this season, it would only run on choke. Afterward, it wouldn't stay running at all. I removed the carb twice and cleaned out the main jet and all other ports thoroughly. It will now run, but only if the pressure wand is depressed. As soon as it needs to run on idle, it dies. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Sounds like the idle jet is still blocked.

After working on it again, I made sure that the main jet and idle jets were clear. I then removed the idle down cable and lubed it. The cable wasn't moving very freely. Trying to start it was difficult. It would "pop" every now and then through the carb. I adjusted the idle down cable a tiny bit, and it finally ran ok and idled ok. Would a sheared flywheel key cause a sporadic backfire? Every now and then, the starter rope would jerk back, but not consistently. This made me think that the flywheel key may be very slightly sheared.

Oh, and thank you for the help with the carb jets!
I am not familiar with the idle down feature and could not find any information on its operation. It would be very rare although possible to shear the flywheel key on a pressure washer engine. I would look at the valves needing adjustment and causing the backfire kickback problem. I wish I could give better information.
Just found these videos-

Thanks, so much! I'll check out those videos! I really appreciate the help! I'll check the valve lash as soon as I get a chance! Also, this video shows the idle down cable, and lubing it up to make it move freely.

Thanks, again, for the help!
