replacement options for dana 6 speed spicer tranny model # 4360-140-ch

i have a craftsman mower with the drive pulley that is just flopping around in place like the bearings are gone and maybe even more damage internally. it literally can flop back and forth like 1/4" of play on the shaft and no apparent resistance and/or connection to any gears inside the tranny to the drive shaft.

it has a dana 6 speed spicer tranny model # 4360-140-ch and i am wondering where i might look for a donor tranny to replace it with? im thinking of looking to buy a parts mower to get a donor tranny for it but not sure what brand mowers use this same tranny. can i use a 6 speed tranny from mtd, troy built, yard man, bolen mowers or will the linkages not connect the same?

on a side note - i am assuming its not worth even opening the tranny up since parts for the pulley shaft are not available to buy anywhere. am i wrong to think this? is there some place to get parts for it?

my thoughts are, whatever caused it to get into this condition, i should assume there is a lot more internal damage inside from whatever fell out or broke for it to become that loose and sloppy.

Bet water got into it. We get some that are hard to shift, took one apart to find rust bath. Not sure which transaxle it is ,don't know them by number but by sight!

the location where it was did have high water so that is probably it, engine "seems" fine though and its running

this is a different model number but it looks like the same tranny https://www.ebay.com/itm/Craftsman-...spicer-4360-128-Transaxle-mower-/323232037891

the engine is good, and the deck is good, the body is in "fair to good" shape (needs some touch up painting of surface rust to look good) so im just not sure if i should scrap the mower for deck and motor or not? it all depends on how hard it will be or can i find a replacement 6 speed tranny for it because all the craftsman mowers i come across now are mostly the automatics.

so i guess the "real" question is, are the trannys "basically" all the same, just either manual or automatic versions? as in they all have standard connection points and linkage hookups so the mowers may have different designs as far as where the control levers are and the linkages but the trannys dont?????

i see a lot of 6 speed manual trannys on other brand mowers and i dont know if i can swap any of those into it as long as its a 6 speed

i was able to get the exact same model number one out of an old troy built i scraped a few weeks back so im good now.

im betting there isnt much of any differences in the trannys as long as they are the same type of single speed or speed select as the old one.

as somone said once, these arent the space shuttle, they are just lawn mowers, so they arent that complicated and most parts will swap right out even if the book doesnt say they do
