Greetings, I have a John Deere STX-38 that I am having problems with reverse gears, it has a Peerless 915-012A transaxle. I have only had this tractor for just short of 25 years and this thing is still kicking. I have replaced the reverse idler gear a few times now, and it needs it again, the teeth break off, I open it up clean it out and put a new gear in. Since it appears to be happening more often, does anyone have some advice on how to prolong damaging the next gear I put in? Thankfully Sears parts sells the gears for not a lot of money, but I am getting too old to be yanking the transaxle out and back in so often.
Thanks in advance for your help!
