Simplicity: 5216 5 speed
Briggs engine: 402707

After successfully replacing the gear on top of starter...
The starter/battery crank well, but no fire... ..and soon the smell of gas.. Remove the air filter... it's very wet inside... air filter soaked.

What would cause this?
(thanks)

Did you by chance pinch, thus grounding, the kill wire from the coil? If you did nothing but change the starter gear, cannot think of anything else that would cause the issue that you describe.

Not Sure Coil?

Don't know...
Didn't know about the kill wire.. You say "coil"... is that part of the Starter?
Or is that part of the copper coil stuff under the Flywheel?
Where does it connect?

That's the part that has the larger spark plug wire coming out, and probably has a smaller wire that will work it's way back to the ignition switch that is used to kill the engine.
