You can't go wrong by the manufacturers recommendation per the owners manual however their are discussions ref pros/cons of synthetics. I personally use regular oil in my small engines and change it once a year @ Spring, and everything runs just fine. JMO :2th:
When it comes to oil brand, it pretty much comes down to your favorite type, as long as it's the recommended weight per the manufacture's specification.
Deere says 8 hrs run time when new, then change out the break in oil and filter. You will need an AM107423 oil filter and 2 qts of 10/30 oil. part# TY22029. Use the Deere stuff.
