I bought a Stil fs 38 trimmer, followed all the directions on storage for the winter. The second spring it wouldn't start, needed a new carburator kit, third year it needed a second carburator kit,I had another problem later in the summer so a mechanic soaked the carb in gunk? i think and it ran but not smooth no high end rev and no idle, just kept stalling, so last summer I had a new carb kit put in AGAIN. The mechanic told me to put in stabilizer mixed with gas for the winter and it started first shot in June NOW IT'S DEAD AGAIN. Could I be cursed with a 2 stroke and buy a 4, I'm scared to buy another 2 stroke. These carb problems are just beyond belief!!! The reason I bought a stil was because my Ryobe was junk and "they" say Stil is one of the best.

Welcome to the forum!:)

Sorry, I don't think I can help you much with the carborator problem, but I know there must be something seriously wrong that is causing this. Are you using the reccommended Stihl oil for the fuel mixture?? Are you sure you are using the correct 50:1 fuel ratio?? I have been using a Stihl 2-cycle trimmer for years and I don't think I'd ever buy any other brand. That's all I can help you with, but hopefully someone else here can help you solve the problem.

I used to use Stihl oil but I bought castrol from my mechanic (small engine),he said it was fine,as for the gas mix I use 1 liter premium to 0.02 oil or 20 ml, by the book I think. I forgot to mention that after 3 weeks of not starting it decided to start yesterday but there was no idle and I couldn't rev the engine just managed to trim a bit till it ran out of gas, it wouldn't start after refueling. I have a feeling the carb is finished AGAIN. Anyone have any thoughts about a husqvarna of stihl 4 stroke? Thanks.

Might be the Ethanol in your fuel causing the problems. Some are switching over to special fuels for the small two strokes in trimmers and chain saws. From what I've heard it is not cheap though. Here's one example:

Dead Stihl

Thanks for every one's replies, it officially dead, leaked 1/2 tank of gas in 3 days while not in use. I will not buy another stihl, I had a new carb kit last summer (3rd one) I always followed the manual BY THE BOOK. My mechanic told me to store it with stabilizer, started 1st pull after winter, but it's dead after about 2 1/2 liters of gas used. Also, the customer service at the dealer treated me like I was stupid. The first time I took it in it was under warranty but with a smirk on his face he said I didn't store it properly, sorry, warranty doesn't cover it, and they know you can't prove it.

Sorry to hear about the troubles with your Stihl, it sounds very much like a lemmon from what you describe. It is a good quality brand, but like with anything, there is always that one in a million chance that you could get a lemmon and it's a shame your dealer wasn't as courteous and able to do more for you.

Hope you have better luck with your next purchase!

Ethanol problems

Hi,I was going to buy a new trimmer BUT I gogled ethanol problems in small engines and apparently e10 in gas is causing havoc in small engines and even cars, lowering gas mileage etc. and the government in the U.S. will soon be allowing more. e15. Apparently it causes corrosion inside engines like the corrosion you find on a battery terminal and it damages CARBS and plastic components. I don't no anything about mechanics but if this "boutique" gas they call it, pure gas already mixed 50 or 40:1 whatever, is too expensive or not available in Canada (haven't checked it out yet) why bother getting a new one? The thing is I need one, I have an acre and a lot of it is brush that I wanted to clear with a blade attachement. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Normally what I do if I know that the fuel in one of my machines is going to be sitting in there for a reasonable amount time is that I'll add some Sta-Bil to it. Never have had a problem with fuel going stale or gunking up carbs using it. Now of course you can't expect it to keep fuel fresh for a real lengthy amount time like say a year, but for the amount of time it's intended to keep fuel fresh for, it always seems to work great. Another option is to simply drain (and run) the fuel out each time back into the can and then put it into your vehicle's tank to burn it off real quick, assuming that the fuel was straight gas from a 4 cycle. Kind of a pain of course to have to buy a little gas each time you use the machine, I know, but at least you'd have the peace of mind knowing the fuel that you put in it is fresh and wouldn't have to worry about it going stale over time because you drain and run it out each time.

I suppose another option is a battery opperated electric trimmer.

Efco trimmers

Thanks for your reply Austen, I saw an ad for a Efco trimmer, never heard of it, they back it up with a 5 year limited? warranty same as Echo unlike sthil 2 yrs. A company that will give 5 yrs must have confidence in their products, any thoughts? thanks.

I personally don't have any experience with their products, but a nice 5 year warranty is definitely a good selling point and something to consider. Here is a google search that I pulled up under "Efco trimmer reviews" Google. It'd be good to read some consumer reviews to see how their products hold up.

I browsed around on their website a bit and did not see a specific link that covered the warranty information, but I sent them a message asking to hear more about it ie; what it covers and doesn't cover.

I'll post their response once I recieve it.

They sent me a PDF attachment of one of their Warrantee Certificates. Due to the lenghth of it, it would be a bit tedious putting it into a post, so I sent you a private message about sending it via email.

Thanks.

Im starting to think trimmers are disposable. Buy new every spring and toss out in the fall. I have Ryobi, mostly cuz of all the attachments. Think now Stihl has that same thing. New Ryobi head unit is 75 bucks. Is it worth spending 75 bucks every spring? I dont know. I do know that I havent gotten angry once this year at my trimmer and it doesnt take as long to trim my yard.

Perhaps you should not be investing in carb kits. Stihl has lowered the price on their Carbs so it can be replaced and sometimes the carb superceds to a different one that may have issues resolved. Also, if the welch plug has come out in the carb, you need to replace the carb anyway. The chance of getting a new welch plug back in and staying in right is difficult even for the pros and if the wrong kind of adhesive is used it will keep coming out. Another thing you can possibly due is buy the fuel/gas mix that is already to go, Stihls version is called motomix. There is no ethanol in that gas.
