Cut my grass last week, 3/4 of the way through got rained on but finished anyway figured mower deck would clogged i would just clean it out this week, but my girlfriends son decided to use it yesterday and he said he started it up and started cutting grass when about 8 feet later it just shut off on him, tried to restart it and it would not start. I go out today start working on it, starter engages but will not turn the motor over, tried moving the motor by hand and it will not budge, i can however turn it backwards a little ways it feels like it is locked up at a certain point. I am lost don't know where to go next?? please help thanks in advance.

Welcome novaman44! :)

First thing I would make sure is nothing else is holding the engine from turning. Check and drive belts on the engine to see if a pulley, the transmission or blades are locked up. If it comes back to an engine problem you can pull the spark plug(s) to release the compression and then see if it turns. If it does not turn with the plugs out your probably looking at some major internal engine issues.

Well torn things apart and found out the counter weight had exploded inside the crank case. anyone recommend a good parts place cheap for briggs and stratton. the crank has some small grooves in it should this be replaced?
