I'm trying to figure out why I get really weak ignition voltage. I can't measure it, but get no spark, and feel only a moderate jolt w/ my fingers. Magnets in flywheel seem very strong. Tried multiple gaps. Do coils go bad? Is the thin wire used to ground out the coil,, to stop the engine? It's a simple magneto coil, I can't post a pic.

Welcome to MLF. Using a business card for setting the gap works very well. Coils usually work or don't work when heated up. The thin wire is the kill wire and shorts the coil to ground when the bail is released. Try removing that wire and see if you have spark. If you have spark, the coil wire is shorting to ground somewhere. If no spark, it's highly likely the coil is bad and needs replacement.
