Well, I've about worn out my Sears/Craftsman 12-HP self-propelled mower. It has done us well over the last 11 years, but seems to be on its last legs.

Our property is just under an acre, odd shaped, with the house sat smack in the middle. It takes about 3 hours to do the front and back.

I don't mind walking behind this one, but sometimes the traction isn't too great, so it needs some handling from time to time.

It seems that a riding mower would be overkill for this patch of grass and there is about five hundred feet of fence along the perimeter. I wouldn't want to have to go back and trim all that separately, since I don't have to now.

Anybody have a similar experience? I'd love to hear about it.

Hello, again, Walt. 12 HP?

If your present mower runs good, how about new wheels? If it's getting old and worn out and starting to show its age, there are some good machines out there. I'd suggest looking at Toro, John Deere, Snapper, Honda, etc. Go with a dealer that will work with you, help you decide what you need based on your circumstances, not his desire to sell you a top of the line unit. I would think that a $650 walk behind mower is going to give you better service and dependability over the next 20 years than a $1500 rider. But give this some thought. Are you going to enjoy chasing a mower around the yard 10-15 years from now?

Well if you like Craftsman, you might take a look at this Craftsman Professional. It has a 12.5 Briggs OHV engine, a 33" cut and a price tag of $1399:

There is also this smaller version which has the 7.75 Briggs OHV, a 21" cut but only costs $399:

The first one is the craftsman pro I mentioned but I couldn't find a link thought. But I saw it at the local store and it looked pretty nice!
