I have a 15 hp Kohler engine on a Troy built riding mower. Every few minutes while mowing it acts as if it has got extra gas in the carb., it kinda coughs a little then black smoke comes out the exaust.

I wonder if your float is sticking just a bit. Maybe try some Sea Foam in the tank and see if that helps any.
