I am looking to purchase a new lawn mower sometime in the near future. Currently I have a Craftsman push lawn mower that is about 15 years old. No real problems with it.

Looking at a lot of reviews on Craftsman lawn mowers has me considering moving to another manufacture. My research keeps bringing me back to Honda.

A little background on my lawn cutting and thoughts on a lawn mower:

- spring I cut my lawn every 5th or 6th day.
- lawn size is about 5,000 square feet, mostly flat land.
-I service my lawn mowers each year.

Okay so here are my questions:

Honda hrr216 push or self propelled? I will be 61 in several months. Will I want to be pushing a lawn mower in another 3 or 4 years from now? Not looking for a heavy lawn mower

What size engine will I need 160 versus 189 (HRX)? Most of my past lawn mowers were rated at 7.5 horse power or 190 CC.

How well does the transmissions hold in the HRR models under normal residential usage?

I would appreciate your thoughts/opinions. It seems like Honda is an excellent choice, but I am still open to suggestions in other manufactures. I am looking for something that will last.

I would go with a Honda self-propelled model. You won't be sorry! :)

:ditto: Hondas are great...and they have a large following on here, so if you ever need help, you won't have to wait long. :) I'd definitely go with a self-propelled, because it can make your day a whole lot easier.

Thanks for the posts so far. The responses so far are leaning toward the Honda self propelled.

Okay, for those that have Honda lawn mowers, is the 160 cc engines powerful enough take care of a normal size lawn (5,000 square feet)? My grass is a combination of tall fescue and zoysia. Not knowing Honda's engine power, would the 189cc be too much power for my needs, plus the added weight of the bigger engine is a concern. Also the HRX is about $200 more.

Based on the comments so far, I am leaning toward the HRR216VKA.

Keeps the opinions coming.........

You would probably be fine with the 160cc engine, unless you let that Zoysia get too long. You should look at both and get a feel for them before you decide.

I have an MTD mower that I bought new in 1999 with a Honda GCV160 engine. It started out being used on my lawn in town in Illinois, then moved to a very rugged lawn in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and I now use it basically as a bush hog in back trails. To this day, it starts easily, and runs like a champ. I think the 160 would do you just fine.
