Hi everyone, can you help me with this issue. The engine (20HP Briggs,441577) runs smoothly only when the choke is pulled at least half way out. If the choke is pushed in, the engine will die. I have seen this issue on other engines so my question is.... what most likely is the problem? Thanks is advance for your suggestions.

Sounds like it's getting air from somewhere. Check your gaskets. You can spray some WD-40 around the gasket(s) while it's running to see if the rpm's pick up.

Dirt in carb.
I agree with 'tmlong'!

It's been my experience when you have to use the choke to keep small engines running, there is trash caught between the needle and seat....and it only takes a speck to cause the problem.

Thanks everyone....

I'll give the carb. a good cleaning and check the gaskets.

Is this your carburetor?

I would ask if this is the carburetor you have first. since you did not provide a type number I can not be sure.
check the following:
Item #947 is getting 12 volts and moves freely. It is common for the solenoid to get clogged with old fuel.

Item#135 may be clogged or the gasket not seating properly

Item #131 should have no play in the body of the carburetor.

View your parts by type number at Arco Lawn Equipment | Home if you need.
