4 cycle 5 hp Toro - died while mowing. Tried to start again, lots of oil smoke and will not stay running. Also oil residue coming from the muffler. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Oh, boy, this is a bad sounding issue. I would start with an oil change, then try starting the engine. I am thinking a valve may have stuck/broke, but you may have to go in deep to find the issue. Good luck and keep us up to date.
Question. Have you recently changed the oil in the mower? My neighbor blew an engine after changing the oil in his mower only to find out he used the wrong oil. He put the mix oil in the mower by accident and it was so thin that it smoked alot and eventually quit running. Just a thought.
If you turned the mower on its side to clean under it or whatever and did so with the carb down you may have saturated the air filter with oil, never tilt a mower with the carb down. Try running it with the air filter remover, it may smoke for a while but will clear up, do not mow with the air cleaner off. If the air cleaner has oil on it get a new one. Have a good one. Geo
A possibility might be over fill or cracked or broke rings. I hope it is just over fill for the pocket books sake. If it is over fill then turn the mower over on it's filler tube side undo the oil plug and drain some out into a shallow pan. If it's the rings or other internals then you are looking at some money. $75-$100 or better, might be time for a new mower ouch!!!
