Deere 115 riding mower engine soot

1876 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Austen
Mower engine is blowing black soot. No oil or fuel spilled. Oil level ok.

Engine runs ok; tractor speed maybe a little slower than normal.

Any suggestions as to cause? Where do I look first and for what?

Thanks.

Found a reference somewhere to engine with excessive smoke which >almost< described the heavy sooting. Suggestion there was to inspect foam precleaner filter as well as the paper filter. Neither looked too bad (nor was the engine smoking a lot) but I replaced them both.

Bingo! No more soot. :)
