I have and older Craftsman GT riding mower that I got for free. I recently broke my v-belt, the one that spins the pully gear on top of the deck. I called Sears and they said that they could not find a replacement belt because they don't make a deck for that mower anymore (model # 917-253740). The gal could not find the right belt for my mower on her computer. Can anyone suggest where to find it? Or a belt that will do the job just as well? Thanks.

Put a piece of string around all the pulleys to measure the length then get a belt from your local mower shop or psrts store . I get most of mine from Freds and Tractor Supply . Hope this helps .

The trick is finding the size you need. If you have the old belt look for numbers on it, or if at all possible measure it with a tape measure to find the size you need just remember belts stretch. Then go to your local parts store, I get mine from NAPA. Make sure it is a local store as you may need to go back for an inch shorter or longer belt. Once it took me four trips to get the right size but that was mostly due to the fact that the store owner wanted to pretend he new more about what I was doing than I did and wouldn't give me the size I asked for instead started one inch bigger than the belt I brought in.

Is this your deck?

If not, maybe there's a model number on your deck somewhere that you can use to look up the part number you need on the sears parts site. I print those pages out and take them to the auto parts store near me and just tell them, "I need a replacement for that belt, please".

There's most likely two belts on your deck. Might not be too bad an idea to replace both while your at it.

Thanks for the tips. I will go to a parts store tomorrow. I could not open that link, bwdbrn1. But I need the belt on top of the deck anyway. There are numbers on the old belt but they are pretty worn. I will let you know how I make out tomorrow.

Here's the model number that came up for this one. It shows a 44" deck.

Model #917255917 - CRAFTSMAN Gt 18 twin garden tractor

And here's the part number it lists for the belt on top of the mower.
