Wonder what sources folks are using these days to choose a new lawn mower. Being familiar with walk behind mowers from several forums I'd be able to make a choice based on that info, but where do people go to gather info if they are not familiar with mower forums, etc?

Well they go to a store and listen to a salesman and buy something that want last most of the times. Thats how it works now unfortunately. You can't buy a quality piece of equipment now a days.

Most people around here go out and buy another cheapie from sears (99% of people around here have a craftsman)

Well...I usually read the reviews on Consumer Reports about how well the mower functioned when new. Then asked around what my various friends had and how well the mower has held up. I eventually did end up with a Craftsman for a few reasons:

1.) Parts availability
2.) Service easier to get since the repair center is in town
3.) Didn't know any better
4.) Still actually like my Craftsman as much as my LBs although for different reasons
5.) Wasn't going to pay $500+ for a new mower

Ditto, my nieghbor bought a John Deer at Lowes or HD, he probably didn't even know he was'nt getting a genuine John Deer.

I'm looking at an Ariens Max Zoom 60 at Home Depot. Can anyone give me reviews, past performance, good points, bad points, value, etc. ? Thanks for your help.

A long, long time ago, and in a galaxy far, far away, I was a car salesman. I actually had the manager tell me that the customer has no clue what they are looking for and/or need, and it was up to the salesman to pick the proper fit. I think, depending upon the dealer, lawn mower salesman adhere to this philosophy. Definately one reason why I won't set foot in two local Cub and also two local 'bota dealers.

Many people buy their mower from one of the "box" stores, which is all well and good, they sell many fine brands. But they need to research the local dealers in their area to see who will be able to provide work on their particular brand. Especially warranty repairs. This is an important factor in making this decision and one that I have used in buying commercial equipment. It does little good to get a bargain if I have to transport a mower 20 miles away to have work done on it. That said I also try to rely on my own limited skills to do routine maintenance and minor repairs. The internet is also a handy tool in finding alternate parts sources for those of us that perform our own maintenance and repairs.
