Edger with B&S 3.5hp model 9J902. Friend gave it to me and said it was the choke spring.

How can I be sure, before I replace it?

:welcome: paulmars. Not quite sure what a choke spring might be. Surging usually indicates a carb that's out of adjustment, or more likely dirty. Start with the air filter and check to see how dirty it might be, and go from there. Especially on an edger that kicks up a lot of dirt and dust.

+1.

Surging is normally caused by a lean condition which is usually often due to a dirty carb. or one that is out of adjustment as mentioned.
