A gear broke so I put a used gearcase in my old RM828. The workshop manual says to slide long axle in, install washer and roll pin then slide short axle in and rotate to engage springs.

Seems simple and I tried 3 times but no luck. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Fixed and mowing. The long axle had broken at the shoulder where it slides into the short axle. It was easy to see when compared to an unbroken axle.
