i'm at a loss. have a 318 and the battery light doesn't go out.
checked light socket for short to ground - ok
tried another rectifier and time delay control - no change
40 volts ac coming from stator
manual says light should go out after a couple min. but doesn't
anyone have any suggestions?

Is this the same one you have been working with all along or a different tractor?

Found a thread in another forum regarding the model 318 that might be of some help:

One mention is of the ignition switch causing it.

Quote from link above:

"Battery shows 14 volts. I found I could make the battery light go off and on by wiggling the wires going to the ignition switch. Will pick up a new switch in the next couple of days and try that. Problem may be the switch or the harness. The wires that connect to the terminal on the edge of the switch rather than the main harness appear to be the problem. They are hot with the switch in the run and start position."

318 working good. turns out that the second rectifier was defective and a new one got it working again.
the other unit has a bad alternator and i will tear it apart next week and post my results
