Loud Pop going uphill & now won't start

I am helping a friend with a 2010 Bolens MTD Lawn Tractor with a 13.5 Briggs & Stratton engine.
Spark Plugs and air filter (i think) were recently replaced.

Upon going uphill he heard a loud pop and the mower died. He is unable to start.
I thought it was the flywheel key. Went to replace and the key was still intact. I replaced it anyways.
Put mower back together and tried to start. The starter gear tries to engage, but it is not able to move the flywheel.
Engine will not start. Multiple tries starting ends up draining the battery and it has to be jumped to recharge the battery.

Does anyone have any other suggestions on what it could be?

I am trying to help him out and fix this, but also impress him that as a chic I can do it. I am at a loss at this point.
I have fixed other push mowers, but not something like this.

If this has been answered before, feel free to direct me there. I tried briefly searching.

Thank you,

Are you able to turn the engine over by hand? Since it quit suddenly and the starter can't spin it, something may have busted inside.
