Engaging Mower Deck

Got this older Craftsman 18 hp, 42 inch mower. Starts, runs good, etc. But once you engage the mower deck, the deck still runs after it's disengaged. I have replaced springs, made certain everything moves freely, replaced the brake pad arms. This helped some. When this stuff started, the deck was engaged all the time, regardless of the position of the engagement arm. The new springs, brake arms and a good lubrication of moving parts has helped, but not eliminated the problem altogether; the deck does not operate when the tractor is first started -- only after the deck is initially engaged. Any ideas?

take a look and see if the bracket holding the deck tension can be moved forward any to give it just a little more slack to release the tension

are you sure there isnt a spring missing or in the wrong place? because the brakes get tension from where the springs are at too. i think you might be a missing spring that pulls the idler arm to give it more slack

You can only learn if you ask the question, so there are no dumb questions.

Pretty sure on all those springs, but I will double check. I'll also see if there is a way I can increase spring tension a bit. As a side note, the belt failed today, so I'll install a new one before I start fiddling with it (except for double checking for missing springs). Thanks.
