Question SR Pinion Gear Key

Anyone have ideas on why this key is not staying up enough to catch on the gear and drive the wheels? I had the toro dealer say to clean up the old grease a little and it should work. I've done that a little but it's still not working. Does it just need to be cleaned up more?

I'm not sure about your mower, but I have seen some that have a small spring under the key and make the gear act like a ratchet when pulled backwards. Are you sure you have the correct key? What model number Toro do you have?

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

My model number is 20043. There isn't a spring and these are the original keys to it.

Clutch washer and\or friction ring are likely suspects.

It ended up being old bad grease that was making the key not rock back and forth.
