Angry Smoking & low RPM

My LB 0292-7087, recently started smoking and the RPM dropped after I started it. Never had this issue before? Any clue on what is going on?

Two things to check. First remove the muffler. Tap on it and see if it sounds tinny and hollow. If it makes more of a thud versus the sound of metal the muffler may be clogged with carbon. As a precaution, cook it on a gas or charcoal grill on high for 45 minutes to an hour, let cool, and then shake out all the ash. You can also flush it out with a hose after shaking most of it out. Second, check the exhaust ports. A sign of smoking and low power is a good indication that the engine is not breathing well. Carefully scrape out any carbon buildup, making sure the piston is up so the carbon doesn't go into the cylinder. When reinstalling the muffler, make sure the muffler support, the piece of stamped steel with the three holes, is centered around the crankshaft and not rubbing. Good luck and let us know how you come out. Bill

You will need to remove the blade adapter to remove the muffler. If you have never down this let me know and I will offer some hints.

Just so you know I have cleaned many mufflers on the gas grill. There is no residue that comes out during baking and no issues with any residual smell after either, otherwise my wife wouldn't approve either. :-)

sounds to me like the float needle in the carb is just starting to go bad and randomly flooding enough to smoke but not completely choke the engine.

take the carb loose but dont remove. you just want to separate it from the gasket mount so if it floods it will drip out rather then in the engine. turn key on if you have a shutoff solenoid and see if it starts dripping, if not rap carb bowl with screwdriver handle a few times and then check again waiting about 10 minutes each time. if you see leakage or dripping at all then you know where the problem is, if not you needed to know for sure anyway.

You can only learn if you ask the question, so there are no dumb questions.

Exclamation 0292-7087 acting weird

My 0292 is acting weird! Ports are clean, muffler is clean & I just cleaned the carb. I installed an line shut off about 6 years ago. Put in new spark plug starts right up after 3 primes runs great for 5 minutes in the driveway, as soon as I hit the grass which was just cut the RPM's drop and it starts smoking, but continues to run slow. If I push down on the handle which lifts the front off the ground it dies and will not start!!!

I am lost.

Any suggestions? Good thing I have my 10424 which runs like new

Thank you.

Check the condition of the float to be sure it is nice a shiny and still floating. Could be taking on gas and sinking in the bowl causing the flooding. Simple solution would be to just replace needle, seat and float unless they were recently replaced. Bill

Smoking and stalling

Well I believe one of the issues with my 0292 is the lower oil seal went bad. Pulled muffle off again after cleaning it about 3 weeks ago and it was soaked with oil inside. So this weekend I plan and tearing it down, replacing the lower oil seal and tearing the carb down also to check float and needle .
Will keep you posted.
