Sorry for the downer in an otherwise happy forum.:

I'm a Honda owner for over 20 years..... Honda makes a **** good engine, now back to the rest...

Sorry for the downer in an otherwise happy forum.:

I'm a Honda owner for over 20 years..... Honda makes a **** good engine, now back to the rest of the mower ...... and there should be a disclaimer in their adds for the smart drive machines.

My lawn isn't anywhere near the picture in a lawn brochure, it's mostly hills, swails, and the occasional rut here or there .... My old Harmony with the composite deck and 2 FIXED speeds cut it like mad...The Honda before it was a beast...a pro-steel deck, 2 FIXED speeds, and blade motor clutch in 1987.

So after the Harmony gave it's last puff..... the logical thing to do was to zip in Home Depot and grab a new Honda. ( No more searching 50 miles for a dealer !) Low and behold a Honda, aluminum deck, "smart-drive" mower for $399..!!! No brainer right..???

Nope..... Start across the first embankment.... ultra light weight of the mower starts trying desperately to slide sideways down the lawn, no problem, I'll go slower, can't feather the "smart-drive" to go my old "locked-in-turtle-speed slow". I'm either at a standstill or racing sideways down the yard. Now this isn't even the rough part of my lawn...!?!??:dunno:

To shorten the story, I was more tired trying to cut my lawn with "Smart-Drive" than if I used a $99. push mower from K-Mart...... I adjusted the control every which way, put rubber stoppers on the handle to keep the thumb controls from moving too far....everything under the sun.....
Now we all know Honda NEVER builds something just a tad WRONG..!! And NO.... I'm not dishing out $700. or more for Hyrostatic Drive that no one knows how to fix. Personally I never saw what was so wrong with 2 or 3 FIXED speeds, Or in Honda's case losing the "Smart-Drive" fast.

Last part...the fix..... 1.) Honda should point out in large letters that the HRR series and probably some of the others, without billion dollar hydrostatic drive systems, will have a difficult time cutting hilly terrain, slopes, and uneven lawns. 2.) I sold my Honda for $275. 3.) Bought something that wasn't available last year, but my eyes Zoomed in really fast...An "ALL-Wheel_Drive" lawnmower for people with hilly, imperfect yards, It has a heavy cast-iron deck, built in hose fitting for self cleaning while it runs, and a 2 handled speed control, use left, right or both if you really want to torque it, knobby wheels, and the best thing is....it has a 190cc HONDA MOTOR......for $499. at Lowes...!!! That's a lot more for the $100. difference.

The Husqvarna HU800- AWD mower with Honda 190cc will not only pull itself up or across a hill when cutting......It will pull YOU up the hill and give you a break.:2th:

Once again....Not Dissing Honda's stuff they sell quality but the "Smart-Drive" engineers did NOT test this mower on REAL lawns....:p

It looks identical down to the condition but without the "Craftsman II" Thing... I guess it's just a "Craftsman I" :dunno:

It runs fine, The transmission works, The blades cut.. and one of the tires slowly leaks air..

Bought it for $75

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it, Maybe clean up/Do basic maintenance and sell or use at friends farm/around the yard..

The filter is a challange, I'll do a little improving here.....spoiled rotten by some automobile manufacturers.........
Is it necessary to use an oil extractor ?
I do have a MityVac suction pump, highly thought of by a great many...and I have a syringe gathering dust...
The hydraulic fluid is next...I will figure out a way....years working on cars, but this is a challange...
I have the internet manual which may help.
Thanks to Simplicity...
She still leaks fluid, this must stop...I'll have to look into the check valve....or a pressure reducing valve, if Simplicity uses one.....

Snapper power mower

I'm a big snapper fan, so this one caught my eye, especially since my old one looks like it needs an engine rebuild. the guy says that it turns over, but does not start. He does not have the side discharge or bagging attachments, which is fine with me as I'd like to mulch anyways. Are those overhead valve Briggs engines on these any good? He didn't mention it, but judging by the picture, it has electric start. He couldn't tell me whether it had the Ninja blade or not, so I may need to buy one of those. Is $30 to much? I need to act in the next couple days as he is moving after that.

I have a 23cvs kohler engine that after cutting for an hour and shutting down for an hour when I restarted the engine it does not have enough power. I always shut off the gas and allow it to run dry so it did not have any gas left in the carburetor. It does not smoke or skip, the only noticeable difference is that the governor is steadily correcting the RPM while only parked at full throttle. Does this sound like the carburetor is allowing too much gas?

Jacobson lawn mower

The shroud over the engine really looks like a lawn boy. Is the engine more than likely made by them? Did Jacobsen actually build these, or did someone build the push mowers for them? Lastly, is it a pain to find parts for them? I think its a really good deal, especially if it runs ok.

I have removed and inspected, cleaned and reinstalled the MTD 13AZ608H131 lawn tractor rear end. I've seen that there was reasonable wear, but what didn't seem to be excessive wear, so as I said, I reassembled the tractor, returned all clutch, brake, pedal, etc. components to spec. This was a matter of multiple removals, by the way, which I don't enjoy. Anyway, when I was convinced that the last reassembly was going to be that moment of victory, and I started the old boy up for a test run, I learned that it's better not to count the chickens before they hatch. The tractor does better in reverse than in forward gear. I have no idea if the original secondary problem of no brakes is resolved because I'm questioning whether to just go ahead and install a new transaxle on this old a tractor. There's hesitation in forward, and it ain't smooth yet in reverse. Am I throwing good money after bad or is it worth it to my male ego to spend another couple hundred replacing the transaxle and then pursue whatever brake issues may remain?
Started out that after replacing all belts - which I've done again, btw, in the course of this journey and yes, they are MTD belts - suddenly the tractor had no brakes according to my wife and it was near impossible to change gears. All around, a challenging operational circumstance. All mowing stopped, the mowing deck was removed in my shop and the tractor went on the blocks for full out maintenance efforts. It's been up and down a few times now. I admit I'm frustrated. I have called MTD to get the brake system diagram for blow up to be sure I installed parts back correctly. It was a Saturday before a holiday so I didn't have a tech to really discuss my overall experience with. Anyway, on my last excursion after dropping the tractor from the blocks, and pulling it back into the shop in disgust and discouragement, I think I found some parts, one of them appears to be a broken part of a casting. I'm prepared to take it apart one last time before using it as target, but my wife loves this tractor and has invested in various attachments neither of us wants to junk. Any assistance or suggestions would be appreciated - and I swear to follow the forum so I can save someone else the in depth experience I've had whenever possible!
