Briggs & Stratton on a Yard Machines races

Hello, I was hoping someone could help me out because I'm kind of at a loss here. I got this mower which is actually in pretty good shape from a neighbor because they had problems with starting and keeping it running. I dumped all of the gas out and cleaned out the carb. I put a new diaphragm on even though it didn't look too bad. Primed it and started it up first pull but this thing just screams. I thought the smaller governor spring looked funny so I replaced it, same issue. I can can reach down and move the governor by hand and that idles it down. There is nothing impeding the governor at all.

Mower - MTD 11A-414088 (Yard Machine)
Motor - B&S 10A902

Hmm, it sounds like maybe something with the throttle/governor linkage is not connected or adjusted right. Perhaps maybe even something broke or missing?

I pulled up a diagram of the linkage seen here. For starters, I would confirm that everything is connected up properly and nothing is missing.

Here is more info regarding governor adjustment.

Hi Austen, thanks for the info!

It looks like I have everything hooked up right and looks like nothing is broken or missing. It looks like the next step is adjusting the governor. I wasn't aware that you could make adjustments on this type of governor but it looks like the Briggs link you provided has some pretty good instructions on how to do so. I'll let you know how it comes out. Thanks.

Hi Malibuster,
I do believe that you identified the problem when you said "you cleaned the carb". I would bet money that you have a jet upside down or a tiny rubber o ring in the wrong place. Get a drawing of the carb and check very carefully where all the parts go. I did exactly the same thing and got the same results. You problem is to much fuel. Good luck.
