Lowell Gates has been chosen for our 1st Member of the Quarter!!!
Here is a few questions we asked
What can you tell us about yourself?
Name is Lowell Gates, grew up in Northwest MO in the 1950's & 60's on a diversified farm; corn, soybeans hay, a few hogs & a 20(+/-) registered Holstein dairy herd. Dad used all John Deere equipment, so I'm pretty "brand specific"! Farm land was hard to rent around here in the early 70's, so I got a job at a lumber yard about 20 miles from home. Worked a couple other jobs afterward, radiator plant & IH dealership. Before taking a job as a full-time Firefighter, now retired after 29 years in the Fire Service (retired 7+ years now).
Can you describe your property?
Wife & I purchased our current "ranch style" house nearly 30 years ago, now having 1-1/2 acres at the edge of town. This gives me room for gardening, our two Dalmatians & playing with the "toys"! Also have a 190 acre brush farm 30 miles from home that makes a good place to "get outa' town". I use the 2004 JD-790 CUT w/300 loader out there quite a bit! Started having a "Garden Tractor Trail Ride" there two Summers ago, hope to keep it going!
Can you tell us a few things about your "fleet"?
When we bought the house, I found a 1958 JD 520 to use, later cleaning it up, giving it a fresh paint job & taking it to a local show. Later brought home Dad's 1958 JD 720 D ES that he bought new, freshened it up with a paint job for shows also. Most of the tractor shows around here at that time were only farm tractors! I did meet a fellow who has a JD 140 w/demo seat & decided to look for a JD garden tractor to use & show. Found a 69-140 in rather tired condition which started my affliction! Then picked up a 65-110, 67-112, 71-110 & 74-112, along with various attachments. All of which have now been sold to "upgrade"!
Ended up selling the 720D & bought an 83-420 w/deck & 54 blade, which is my current snow pushing tractor & for plow days. A 1980-314 is used for blowing snow, belly blade, etc. Also have several attachments for these tractors, some that I use, others just for shows. I mow with an early 90'd JD F525 front deck.
I picked up a 1969 JD 60 Lawn Tractor with a blown engine a few years ago & since there is no direct replacement engine available, I decided to modify! Put in an 8 HP Briggs & made it to look somewhat like a JD model 62/"unstyled" L farm tractor. Next in the "modifieds" came the 317 "rolling chassis", which became the 317 "Special" with 28" added to the frame & an oak stake-side bed. Used for parades, towing my line of 7 older model JD lawn carts. My last modified was a 1970 model 70 Lawn tractor that became the 70 I (Industrial).
This last Winter I restored a model 56 & model 68 JD RER's. Along with some JD pedal tractors which are fitted to the lawn carts for parade duty.
Last but not least can you share some pics?
