Spring 2014 Machine of the Quarter!
May 29, 2014 - 9:37 PM - by Austen
We are pleased to announce the winner of MLF's very first Machine of the Quarter, Smitty's 1949 Eddleman!!

An interview with the one and only, Smitty76 (Chris) the restorer:

1.
MLF: What got you into Eddlemans?

Smitty76: What got me in to Eddlemans, well my grandfather had two which I mowed with when I was much younger Years later, I ran across one at a tractor show. Happened to know the guy, and I bought it from him. It needed a new blade spindle, and I knew where Eddlemans was so I went to see if I could get parts. Sure enough, and you see what I have now.

2.
MLF: How did you come upon this particular machine?

Smitty76: This one came from Kens (Eddleman) what I call the Goody Basement. This is where he has all the trade in and spare parts mowers. Ken also has one up in his showroom area, but it hasn't been restored as much as mine.

3.
MLF: How was the restoration? Straight forward compared to most or more challenging? If so, why?

Smitty76: This restoration wasn't much different from any of the others. If you notice, the basic design hasn't changed much over the years. The hardest thing was getting a new handle made. I scored a piece of oak 4x4 from a saw mill I had to work at, and a friend of mine does woodworking, so he fashioned the new handle.

Quick history lesson on Eddlemans:

Eddleman made mowers prior to this one, but 1949 was the first year of the self propelled. The deck is aluminum, 17" cut. Engine is a Briggs model N. Also think that 49 was the last year for wooden handles.

Let's take a look back at the restoration.
